Randagismo, ' il nostro primo obiettivo dovrebbe essere l'eutanasia'

"Abbiamo deviato dalla nostra missione: il controllo della popolazione animale". La decisione dell'Animal Control Department è di quelle destinate a fare discutere.

Sylvia Carrillo, city manager di Aransas Pass  ha scritto ai circa 8mila abitanti della cittadina Texana per informarli che- dopo una permanenza di tre giorni senza che nessuno li adotti- i cani dei canili saranno sottoposti a eutanasia.  Fredda e diffidente la reazione dei cittadini ai quali viene chiesto un contributo di 5 dollari (come verrà utilizzato?) e decisamente indignata quelle dei volontari che stanno protestando.

L'Animal Control Department ha pubblicato un sondaggio online per chiedere ai cittadini se sarebbero disposti a pagare un sovrapprezzo di cinque dollari sulle bollette per coprire i servizi di cura degli animali. Ai più non è chiaro se questi fondi extra verranno impiegati per migliorare le cure veterinarie o per pagare l'eutanasia. Cheryl Schneider, direttore di una struttura "che riesce a far adottare il 60% dei 7500 animali che ogni anno arrivano al rifugio, con un risparmio il 90% per i prossimi 3 o 4 anni" -definisce la decisione "barbara" e "una tragedia". " Non ci vogliono budget più grandi, - dichiara- ma più volontari (che non sono un costo) e le spese possono essere coperte con le donazioni".

Secondo Sylvia Carrillo, della quale sono già state chieste le dimissioni con una petizione on line, il controllo della popolazione canina non può essere raggiunto puntando sulle adozioni, inoltre, mancano adeguati fondi e servizi veterinari.

"We have, in the last five years...steered away from our mission. Our mission is animal control, and that is controlling the animal population. Which means our primary goal should be euthanization. We have not planned accordingly or budgeted accordingly. Without the assistance of our local (veterinarians), which nobody has really stepped up, we have to go back to euthanization."

"As an open admission shelter director that adopts out 60% of the 7500 animals that come to the shelter yearly and has a save rate that exceeds 90% for 3.5 years, I have to say this is a tragedy. The city manager is SO misinformed and uncaring, it is sickening. It doesn't take a bigger budget, it takes volunteers and programs that don't cost a thing and your donations will pour in to cover those medical expenses. This is so barbaric. How is the public health protected and the number one reason for animal control is to protect the public against rabies. Way to go for getting it all wrong. No way will I ever spend a dime in this town again. Who is going to walk those healthy, adoptable dogs and cats to the kill room? What if the family is on vacation and their dog gets out. Way to serve the public."
